About Henna
I first heard about Permaculture in the early 2010s. Its philosophy struck me immediately so I started applying permaculture principles, systems and elements to almost every inch of our urban yard in Turku (Åbo).
Over the years the yard has become home to a small-scale forest garden, numerous perennial vegetables, chickens, bees and mushroom logs.
In addition to our city garden, we are little by little moving towards more self-sufficient lifestyle at our summer house in Vartsala, Salo, where we have 1,2 hectares of land by the Baltic sea and thousands of opportunities.
Alongside my work as a clarinettist in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, I have studied a degree in gardening. As a gardener, I only want to work according to the ethics of permaculture: caring for the Earth and people, and being aware of the fair distribution of resources.
Today I have the privilege to teach permaculture gardening in several folk high schools around Finland. I also write articles for garden magazines and newspapers and give lectures on permaculture related topics. As a team with two other permaculture friends, we have translated into Finnish two Swedish books, one about perennial vegetables and another about forest gardens.
